If you're going to be in Rome then one of the things that you need to see if the Colosseum. This amphitheatre is nearly two thousand years old and was built by the families of Vespasian and Titus between 70 and 80 AD. And whether you're traveling from Davisville Village for a tour across Europe or are a native of Italy, this is a site that will definitely take your breath away the first time that you set foot inside. It still sits in the centre of Rome and was the largest structure of its kind created during the Roman Empire.

In its time, the Colosseum was capable of seating 50,000 people and was the site of everything from theatre performances based on Roman mythology to gladiator contests. While today you won't find anyone from a chiropractor Toronto to a student in Naples going to anywhere of this size to see a night of entertainment, this was used by the people of Rome even for things like mock sea battles and executions up until the early medieval era about one thousand years after it was built. Then throughout the years it was used as everything from a fortress to a Christian shrine.

The Colosseum is now in ruins thanks to damage caused by earthquakes and stone robbers. But it is still one of the main tourist attractions in the city and sees millions of visitors each year from all over the world. There are people who come into the city for a currency exchange Vancouver to Japan conference and add a visit onto their trip and those who are traveling to the city with family to see all of the sites from the Roman Empire that still exist throughout the country. There is a museum dedicated to the Roman god Eros on the second floor and there are still a number of subterranean passageways below the structure that were used by gladiators and wild animals.

This amphitheatre means different things to a number of people today. While some might just see it as an attraction that you could get a custom framing photo of to bring home, others see it as a Christian sacred site even though it was not built for that purpose. This started in the 16th century and it has been used by important members of the Roman Catholic Church since that time all the way into the 21st century. If you're on a youth trip doing team building exercises and exploring the city with a Christian group then this might be one of the sites on your agenda to visit. There are also many other buildings throughout the world that were influenced by this design.
